An overview of the work and ministry of FAM Houston. Join us in creating a city where everyone belongs!

At some point in our lives, we've all felt like outsiders.

Maybe you've relocated to the city and it doesn't yet feel like home. Or you feel forgotten or excluded for some reason. These experiences of “being on the outside” can connect us to each other—resettled refugees, immigrants, and local Houstonians alike.

At its core, FAM Houston believes it takes insiders and outsiders befriending one another in community to find true belonging.

our mission

To work for justice by building empowered community among refugees, immigrants and local Houstonians. We do this through four practices…

Hospitality
Mutuality
Storytelling
Inclusivity

Our Programs

Women’s empowerment Group (WEG)

WEG creates brave space for Congolese and other refugee women to find mutual community with American women, build a support network, and grow in confidence while navigating life in Houston. Our collaborative initiatives include adult English classes, emergency assistance, women’s and pediatric healthcare support, and the Youth Empowerment Group.

Throughout the school year, we meet weekly on Thursday mornings, 10 am–noon, at St. Luke’s UMC Gethsemane (6856 Bellaire Blvd) to share resources and check on each other. A Zoom option is available; to get the link, email Francine at francine@famhoustontx.org

SHAMBA YA AMANI (FARM OF PEACE)

Our community farm in Alief is run by resettled refugees, immigrants, and local Houstonians with the hope that this agricultural endeavor will serve as a model for increasing food access and human connection.

We gather every Saturday morning to tend the community field, harvest vegetables, and host seasonal events like Cut-Your-Own Bouquet Days. Volunteers are always welcome!

Location: 8401 Dairy View Lane

PAMOJA

Meaning “together” in Swahili, Pamoja pairs newcomer and Houstonian families to form relationships, engage in mutual learning, and walk alongside one another through life’s ups and downs.

Our companioning model bridges gaps for newcomers and locals. Companions receive comprehensive training before they are matched with a family. Our hope is that companions will check in weekly.
